Alternative Hen Do Ideas // Hens with Pens

Weird and Wonderful wedding world // Hens with Pens

We all know when you get engaged most girls are all about the dress and decor but one very important thing that can take lots of precision planning is the Hen Do. There are so many things you can do now and not all of them have to involve strippers and big inflatable willies!

We have a post from Penny and Mona from Hens with Pens giving you a great idea for an activity to include on your hen do.

Hens with Pens is a weird and wonderful take on hen party life drawing. To draw out the the inner creative spirit of our hens we provide them with berets and moustaches to don throughout their two hours, making the traditional life drawing class full of fun and helping hens bond on their important party night. To set the scene, Hens with Pens also provides a soundtrack of retro swing music, making the session more lyrical and tongue in cheek. If you’ve never drawn before, it doesn’t matter, we think it’s more important you have fun and we recognise that creativity comes in all shapes and sizes.

In the first hour, we get hens to do some low-pressure portraits of each other that can and usually do have hilarious consequences! These always embrace the personalities of the group but we also teach traditional techniques for those that want to pick up a few tips. At halftime, we sneak in the model so he’s a surprise for the Bride-to-be. My business partner, Penny, agrees that our most common questions are “Is the model nude?”, and “Does he get shy?”. But it’s all in a day’s work for a life model. As trained artists, Penny and I understand the male-dominated traditions of the art academy and life-drawing, and that’s why we like to have so much fun subverting this institution by dressing as the cliché artiste, and drawing a male model, for a modern twist!

Hens with Pens parties are definitely an unusual way to embrace traditional creativity with contemporary culture!

Exciting times ahead…..

The Weird and Wonderful Wedding World has hosted two great shows here in Bristol over the past two years, and the next show is set to be even more spectacular than before!

The alternative wedding show was a Vision of Emily Fisher who felt there was a gap in the market for something a bit different from your normal wedding fair, with two shows under her belt it was time to move on and focus on her ever growing photo booth and graphic design business, and that is where I come in as the new owner of The Weird and Wonderful Wedding World.

Grace Kingsley Make Up Artist

My name is Grace Kingsley, I am a make up artist, Hair stylist and Nail artist. I am born and bred in Bristol and come with twelve years experience in the fashion and Bridal make up industry, what I don’t know about weddings is probably not worth knowing! Having been part of the weird and wonderful wedding world from the beginning with my team of make up artists and hair stylists I knew that all Emily”s hard work couldn’t go to waste, so I jumped at the opportunity to buy the business and make sure it lived on.

The alternative scene is huge and with weddings being a day that should represent you and your partners personalities, the possibilities are simply endless. I have a few changes and some big plans in store for Weird and Wonderful but they all come with the promise that the 2015 show will be something not to be missed!

Olivier Burnside Photography // Alternative Wedding Exhibitor Update

Olivier Burnside

Hello, I’m Olivier from Olivier Burnside Photography and I’m passionate about photographing weddings.

I provide coverage that’s, well, a little less ordinary!  This doesn’t mean that I’m radically alternative, just that I try to avoid cliché and look for more interesting images instead.

Olivier Burnside

Broadly, my style can be characterised as what you may have heard termed “photojournalistic” or “reportage”.  This means that I prefer a documentary style where people are photographed interacting naturally rather than posing; moments which get right to the heart of the moment as it happened.

You won’t see me barking orders at you or your guests – I’m there to document, not dictate – the way it should be.  It’s not all about the documentary though, I love to combine it with beautiful couple shots too.  And although you won’t often see them on my website, I also do group shots at most of the weddings I cover.

Olivier Burnside

I’m fascinated by how people relate to one other and with their environment.  As weddings bring together people young, old and everything in between, there’s so much scope for interesting dynamics.  That is why I enjoy weddings so much.

I love images that tell stories.  I also love those that ask questions.  I’m always looking for both in my work.

Olivier Burnside

Every wedding and every couple are different.  That’s why I approach couple shots with creativity and imagination too, so that your images don’t merely replicate those that most other people have from the same venue.

Taking some time to browse this site will tell you more about my style than I can in words, so please visit to see more.

That’s enough about me, if you like what I do, drop me a line, I would love to hear more about your wedding

Kind Hearts & Coronets Bridal Emporium // Alternative Wedding

Oscar Wilde once observed that “One should either be a work of art or wear a work of art”  and this is the ethos behind Kind Hearts & Coronets Bridal Emporium.

With a background in theatrical costuming, and a passion for history and textiles, designer Philippa established Kind Hearts & Coronets 19 years ago.  She had a succesful bridal boutique in Gloucester city centre for many years, alongside working as a tiara designer, until illness forced her to close the shop.  Whilst recuperating, Philippa moved into designing Steampunk jewellery and accessories then returned to the theatre after being asked to design costumes for a Steampunk inspired musical written by friend Steve Thompson, writer for Dr Who/Sherlock.

Kind Hearts

Now going back to her creative roots and combining all of her craft skills, she is relaunching Kind Hearts & Coronets, designing bespoke  dresses, headdresses, tiaras and jewelled bouquets for vintage and alternative weddings.  Inspired by the extravagance of bygone eras, each piece is an eclectic mix of historical style and current fashion.

Kind Hearts

Philippa told us  “I take the inspiration for my gowns and jewellery from history and events all around me – rose covered masks inspired by Romeo and Juliet,  a tangle of leather barbed wire and poppies spilling down a bodice to commemorate the centenery of the First World War, etc.   I am thrilled to be part of this April’s Weird and Wonderful World and am currently working on several new samples especially for the show.  I am known for the lavish decoration on my dresses, creating a collage of textures, fabrics and colours, adorned with handcrafted flowers, crystals, vintage pieces and recycled items.  All of my gowns, accessories and bouquets are created uniquely through close collaboration with the bride, designed and decorated to reflect their interests and personality, often incorporating hand made charms containing a favourite quote or line from a song.  One cannot always be a work of art, but on your wedding day you should most definately be wearing a work of art!”
